Chinese silk first reached the Mediterranean world in the time of Julius Caesar. “The Silk Road”, originally coined for the caravan route connecting China with the West through Central Asia, has been broadened to include all transcontinental trade routes, overland and maritime. Along these routes travelled not only merchants but also soldiers, diplomats, pilgrims, and peoples of all kind. They left rich histories.
