Chinese silk first reached the Mediterranean
world in the time of Julius Caesar. “The Silk Road”, originally coined
for the caravan route connecting China with the West through Central Asia, has
been broadened to include
all transcontinental trade routes, overland
and maritime.
Along these routes travelled not only merchants but also soldiers, diplomats,
