Islam and Buddhism along the Silk Road

1. The spread of Islam and Buddhism along the Silk Road.

The Silk-road was the highway for the spread of religions, especially Islam and Buddhism.  The arts of the two religions are distinctive.  Buddhist art teems with human and animal images representing divinities.  Such representation is proscribed in Quranic art, which emphasizes geometric patterns and elaborate calligraphy for conveying the words of God.

2. Parchment folio from a ninth century Quran.

3. The Diamond Sutra, woodblock printed on paper around 868.
